The Rhein-Niers-Bahn ( RB 33 ) is a regional train line in North Rhine-Westphalia . It connects Essen with Aachen via Duisburg on the Rhine and Mönchengladbach on the Niers . In Lindern , the train will be reinforced by a part from Heinsberg . (Course book sections 420, 425 and 485).

business

The line runs every hour between Essen and Aachen. In the station alleviating between Moenchengladbach and Aachen coming from Aachen trains are winged . The front car continues its journey as before in the direction of Mönchengladbach, while the rear one drives to Heinsberg after changing direction. In the opposite direction, it is coupled in front of the railcars coming from Mönchengladbach, both of which continue on to Aachen in double traction .

It usually come EMUs of 425 series and 426 series are used. In the event of malfunctions, including problems with the railcars in autumn, push-pull trains consisting of n-cars and a class 111 locomotive were used. The line is operated by DB Regio .

history

Initially, the line only ran between Wesel or Duisburg and Mönchengladbach. The timetable change in December 2002 it replaced by extending the beginning in Duisburg rides on the section Mönchengladbach - Aachen the frontier railway, which had previously been considered by binding the Rhein-Emscher-Express began in Mönchengladbach and beyond Aachen on the railway line between Cologne and Aachen to to the train station Köln-Deutz under the line number RB 21.

This resulted in the following principle, which was used until December 2016. The line was made up of two hourly connections, which were offset by about 30 minutes:

  1. Wesel  - Duisburg  - Krefeld  - Mönchengladbach
  2. Duisburg - Krefeld - Mönchengladbach - Aachen or Heinsberg - Aachen ( wing )

This resulted in a 30-minute cycle on the section between Duisburg and Mönchengladbach .

In the traffic planning of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia of 1998 the dissolution or renaming of the Rhein-Niers-Bahn was planned. From 2015, it should run on the Wesel – Duisburg section as the S-Bahn line S 20 and continue from Duisburg to Düsseldorf . On the Wickrath –Duisburg section, the Rhein-Niers-Bahn should operate as the S 21 from 2015 at the latest and continue from Duisburg to Kamen . The takeover of the Aachen – Wickrath section into the network of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn was not included in the plans. These plans were not implemented.

On March 1, 2008, the AVV published a future concept for 2015, according to which the Rhein-Niers-Bahn should run from Duisburg via Mönchengladbach and Lindern to Heinsberg on the one hand and to Aachen on the other. This meant that the Rhein-Niers-Bahn was to take over operations on the Lindern – Heinsberg line , which was originally awarded to the Euregiobahn . The final planning finally envisaged a wing train concept in which two units of the 425 series drive from Aachen in double traction and a train division takes place in Lindern. This concept was finally implemented with the timetable change on December 15, 2013. The stop at Kohlscheid station, which has existed since the line was introduced , was canceled in the course of the timetable change. Since December 13, 2015 this has been served again at the request of many customers. Since the timetable change on December 11, 2016, a double traction consisting of a class 425 (to Duisburg) and a class 426 (to Heinsberg) has been used.

With the timetable change in December 2016, the northern train route between Wesel and Mönchengladbach was renamed and renumbered as Emscher-Niederrhein-Bahn (RB 35). The renumbering was possible because the previous line RB 35 Der Weseler was upgraded to the Rhein-IJssel-Express (RE 19). The operator of the two new lines RE 19 and RB 35 is Abellio Rail NRW . On December 15, 2019, the Rhein-Niers-Bahn was extended via Mülheim to Essen main station.

future

DB Regio was once again able to win the tender for operation from December 13, 2020 to December 10, 2034. Three- and five-part electric multiple units of the type Alstom Coradia Continental , which have 155 and 266 seats respectively, will then be used. An additional stop in Essen West is also planned for December 2020 after the new vehicles have been commissioned.
