geography
Neighboring places from Oberbruch are Dremmen in the south, Heinsberg in the west, Unterbruch in the northwest and Ratheim in the east.
history
A broiker buysch is first mentioned in a document in 1382, but it is unclear whether this was already a settlement. A farmstead ( hoff in dem Broik ), which belonged to the Heinsberg fief, is mentioned for the first time in 1449. Oberbruch belonged to the Dremmen court until the 19th century; the Catholic parish even belonged to the parish of Dremmen until 1910, when it became the rectorate.
In 1852 Oberbruch was a hamlet with 22 buildings and 115 inhabitants. It belonged to a community association "Oberbruch", which also included the villages of Eschweiler , Grebben and Hülhoven , the hamlets of Hagen and Niethausen as well as various farmstead groups (e.g. Bleckden or Kranzes) and individual buildings (e.g. Kivit or Oberbruchermühle). Today's Oberbruch has grown together from most of these settlement centers.
On January 1, 1969, the place was incorporated into Oberbruch-Dremmen . Oberbruch has been part of Heinsberg since January 1st, 1972.
Place name
The place name is derived from the field name Bruch . The epithet "Ober-" (Over-), which was added in the 16th century, distinguishes the place from the neighboring Unterbruch.
Local nickname
The low-lying place was regularly - in some years even several times - hit by floods of the worm. The inhabitants of the neighboring towns gave the Oberbrucher the nickname "Waterratte" (dialect for water rats ).

Bike paths
There are several well-developed bike path connections to the neighboring towns. The situation was improved by the new Rur bridge between Oberbruch and Ratheim; it replaces an old bridge over the Rur which was in disrepair and collapsed in 2005.
Traditionally, there is a strong need for people looking for relaxation in Oberbruch in the pedestrian and bicycle traffic between Oberbruch and the neighboring Ratheimer Adolfosee .
