Local history

The first settlements of the 'Kämpchen' in the local area of Breberen and at Kollweider Hof / Haus Altenburg are documented by archaeological finds from the Neolithic Age .

By Wilhelm soil grave finds have been studied from Roman settlement time in the northern outskirts and described. The place name with its origins from Buyr, Buere (for home / place of residence) as in Breyberen, Bredbuere and the mentioned written forms indicates a wide (Brede ...) free settlement area and thus proves a regular settlement on the terrain spur around today's church Early Franconian period, i.e. from around the 4th to 5th centuries.

During the migration of peoples, which began in the east in 375 and spread to the west, the Franks came across the Rhine with their migrations. When Stilicho withdrew the Roman legions to Italy to protect the motherland around the year 406, the Franks continued their migrations and also took possession of our closer homeland. When the Frankish King Chlodewech (481 to 511) came to power, the Salian Franks were west of the Meuse; they got their name from Salland, the area of the Yssala, today's Yssel. The Ripuarian Franks lived on the banks of the Middle and Lower Rhine and had made Cologne their capital under their King Sigbert. In an attempt to expand further south, the Franks under their King Chlodewech, after their victory at Soissons in 486 over the last remainder of the Roman Empire under Syagrius, came across the Alemanni, who in 496 near Tolbiacum, today's Zülpich, were decisively beaten. As a result of this victory, King Chlodewech and his great men accepted Christianity. Chlodewech's four sons expanded the Frankish Empire, but the slowly emerging manors gradually split up the vast Merovingian Empire.

Breberen then belonged to the Jülich office of Millen . Row graves and a wooden post church from the 8th / 9th centuries Century are archaeologically proven. The local Fronhof was a Heinsberg fiefdom in the 14th century . The patronage right to the church (St. Maternus), perhaps originally a branch of Echt-Susteren (Netherlands), was in the hands of the Lords of Millen.

Breberen had a total of 382 inhabitants in 1828 and 443 in 1852. The villages of Brüxgen , Buscherheide and Nachbarheid belonged to the community of Breberen . On January 1, 1963, Breberen merged with Schümm to form the new municipality of Breberen-Schümm . With the law on the reorganization of communities in the Selfkant district of Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg of June 24, 1969, the community of Breberen-Schümm was incorporated into the community of Gangelt on July 1, 1969.

Church history

The parish of St. Maternus Breberen today includes the places Breberen, Broichhoven, Brüxgen, Buscherheide, Nachbarheid and Schümm. The majority of the population consists of Catholics .

The parish was mentioned in a document in 1079. The Lords of Millen were the landlords . In 1282 the manor was sold to the von Heinsberg family . The patronage of the church was connected with this. In 1492 the church was incorporated into the Heinsberg Gangolfuss pen, which also owned the tithe . After belonging to the Diocese of Liège , the Archdiocese of Cologne and now the Diocese of Aachen , Breberen has been part of the Gangelt deanery since 1925 . The current church was built around 1830 and blown up on October 18, 1944 during World War II . In 1954 the church was rebuilt with a new facade and a west tower .

In the course of the parish reforms in the Diocese of Aachen, the formerly independent Catholic parish of St. Maternus Breberen was incorporated into the community of the Catholic parishes of Gangelt.
