Parish Church of St. Maternus

The Catholic parish church of St. Maternus is a listed church building in Breberen , a district of the Gangelt community in the Heinsberg district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

An excavation in 1950 resulted in a three-aisled wooden church from the 8/9. Century on an early Christian burial ground and a hall building from the late 9th century with its late Gothic extensions.

The hall with a choir apse closed on three sides was built between 1827 and 1890. It was badly damaged in World War II. The western single-tower facade was built in 1954, in the same year a flat ceiling was installed inside .

The Maasland triumphal cross group made of wood from around 1520 is noteworthy. It is attributed to the surroundings of the workshop of the master of Elsloo . The corresponding assistant figures are significantly smaller than the crucifixus.
