A Dutch carver of the late Gothic period who was not known by name and worked on the Meuse and Lower Rhine from around 1510 is referred to as the Master of Elsloo .

Naming

The master of Elsloo got his emergency name after his work for a church in Elsloo in the Netherlands , an Anna selbdritt , i.e. Saint Anne , with Mary and child. After a few years on the works ascribed to him, it is assumed that he was active between 1510 and 1525. His works are still examples of the traditional medieval veneration of saints in the Netherlands in late Gothic high culture before the Reformation .

Workshop and school

Possibly the master of Elsloo had his workshop in Roermond . Two of his works can be found in the Münsterkirche in Roermond . He passed his style on to his students and his influence can still be found in the Limburg area and the neighboring regions in the late Middle Ages.

Works

In addition to the main work created for Elsloo, works for other churches in the region are ascribed to the master of Elsloo . Some of his works are on permanent loan in Kempen in North Rhine-Westphalia in the Museum of Lower Rhine Sacred Art.

identification

Jan van Oel has recently been suggested as the master's name.
