Primera División de Costa Rica 2008/09
The 2008/09 season included the 91st and 92nd edition of the Primera División de Costa Rica , the highest Costa Rican soccer league. This season, two championships - Invierno Scotiabank 2008 and Verano Scotiabank 2009 - were played. An overall table was created from the results of both championships to determine the relegated to the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División . In the Invierno, Saprissa won the championship for the fifth time in a row (28th), in the Verano Liberia Mia CF triumphed for the first time.
Competition mode
In the 2008/09 season two championships were played, first the Torneo de Invierno 2008 from July to December, then the Torneo de Verano 2009 from January to May. The Torneos were played in the following mode:
- The twelve participating clubs were divided into two groups A and B.
- Within each group, the clubs met once at home and once away, and there was one game against the clubs in the other group. In total, there were 16 games per team.
- After the group stage, the runners-up competed against the third-placed players in the other group in the quarter-finals in a two-legged manner.
- In the semi-finals, the group winners met the quarter-final winners.
- The two semi-final winners played out the champions in the final.
- At the end of the season, an overall table was created to determine the relegated to the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División.
- The champions of both Torneos qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League 2009/10.
