Liga de Fútbol de Primera División 2015/16

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2015/16 season included the 105th and 106th edition of the Liga de Fútbol de Primera División , the highest Costa Rican football league. This season, as usual in recent years, two championships - Invierno Banco Popular 2015 and Verano Banco Popular 2016 - were played. An overall table was created from the results of both championships to determine the relegated to the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División . The winners of both championships qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League 2016/17 . Record champion Saprissa won his 32nd title in Invierno and the championship for the 25th time in Verano Heredia. Coronado finished last in the overall table and was relegated.

Competition mode

The 2015/16 season was divided into the two seasons Invierno Banco Popular 2015 and Verano Banco Popular 2016 . The two championships were played in the following mode:

  • First, the twelve participating teams played the best four teams in a single round (return leg) in the mode everyone against everyone .
  • These four best teams contested the semi-finals in home and away matches (1st against 4th, 2nd against 3rd).
  • In the final, the two semi-final winners played off the champions in both legs.

An overall table was created from the main rounds of the two championships (Invierno and Verano). The last placed in this rating rose to the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División .

Special additional rule

  • Each squad (consisting of a maximum of 30 players) was allowed to have a maximum of four foreigners.
  • All teams had to let U-21 players play for at least 810 minutes. All clubs that did not comply with this rule had to pay a fine of one million colones, all others were paid this sum as a bonus, the club with the most accumulated minutes even 3 million colones.

Attendees

Except for relegated AS Puma Generaleña , all 11 clubs from the previous season continued to participate. New here was Municipal Liberia as a climber from the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División . Of the seven Costa Rican provinces, only Puntarenas had no representative in the FPD; San José was most strongly represented with four clubs. The city of Alajuela was home to two clubs (AD Carmelita and LD Alajuelense), which played their home games in the same stadium.
