The 2009/10 season included the 93rd and 94th edition of the Primera División de Costa Rica , the highest Costa Rican soccer league. Two championships - Invierno Scotiabank 2009 and Verano Scotiabank 2010 - were played this season. An overall table was created from the results of both championships to determine the relegated to the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División . The winners of both championships qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League 2010/11 . Liberia Mia CF changed its name to Verano Scotiabank in Águilas Guanacastecas. Brujas FC won the first championship title with the Torneo Invierno Scotiabank 2009, and CD Saprissa with the Torneo Verano Scotiabank 2010 the 29th championship title in the club's history.
Two championships were played in the 2009/10 season, first from July to December the Torneo de Invierno 2009, then from January to May the Torneo de Verano 2010. The Torneos were played in the following mode:
The twelve participating clubs were divided into two groups A and B.
Within each group, the clubs met once at home and once away, and there was one game against the clubs in the other group. In total, there were 16 games per team.
After the group stage, the runners-up competed against the third-placed players in the other group in the quarter-finals in a two-legged manner.
In the semifinals, the group leaders competed against the winners of the two quarter-final pairings in the first and second leg.
In the final, the two semi-final winners met each other on a return leg. The winner is Costa Rican champion for half a year.
At the end of the season, an overall table was created to determine the relegated to the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División.
The champions of both Torneos (Invierno and Verano) qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League.
Special additional rules
Each squad (consisting of a maximum of 25 players) was allowed to have a maximum of five foreigners.
Each team had to play in both halves of the season (Invierno and Verano) in the group stage to 1440 minutes of U-21 players. If the 1440 minutes were not reached, 3–5 points were deducted (depending on the minutes available).
