Brujas FC was a football club from Desamparados , Canton Desamparados , Province of San José , Costa Rica , which played in the highest Costa Rican league, the Primera División de Costa Rica .

history

Beginnings (2004-2006)

In the spring of 2004, some businessmen, mostly of European descent, decided to buy up the AD Guanacasteca club, rename it Brujas FC and play in the Primera División de Costa Rica . Guanacasteca was re-founded the following year, so that Brujas FC is not officially the successor club of Guanacasteca, but only acquired their first division franchise in retrospect.

The club's first hometown was Escazú, the "city of witches", hence the name Brujas FC (Hexen FC). There they played their games in the ST-Center stadium. Since Brujas FC was not well received by the population in Escazú, Brujas often changed the venue of his home games until 2007, so Brujas played his home games in the old Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica .

Minor Vargas era (2006-2010)

In 2006, the businessman Minor Vargas, who was also active in various other Costa Rican clubs, joined Brujas FC. His goal was to establish Brujas in the top division and to create a large youth department. He also moved Brujas FC to Desamparados, where Brujas has played his home games at the Estadio Jorge "Cuty" Monge since then .

In 2009 Brujas FC won the Costa Rican championship for the first time in December and then took part in the CONCACAF Champions League in the 2010/11 season .

On November 23, 2010, Minor Vargas resigned as club president, but he will continue to support the club through his sports marketing company Grupo ICONO.

Dissolution (2011)

After Minor Vargas was charged with $ 670 million laundering in the US in January 2011 and tax evasion in Costa Rica and, like all of its companies, bankrupt, Brujas 'board of directors was in shambles as all of the club's expenses came almost entirely from Vargas' company. or were carried by himself.

Many players left the club at the end of January because otherwise the club would not have survived the rest of the season until mid-May due to the many salaries to be paid. Brujas entered Verano 2011 with a young team, mostly from players who had moved up from the U-19. The team narrowly failed to qualify for the playoffs. The home game against the UCR was played by Brujas in camera for reasons of cost.

In mid-March all attempts to save the association were stopped. On April 1st, all employees, including sporting and administrative management, left the club for financial reasons. Rolando Vargas, son of businessman Minor Vargas, then negotiated with several interested parties in the top division franchise.

On April 8, 2011, it was announced at a press conference that the administration of the franchise would initially be sold to Juan Luis Hernández and his club Orión FC (playing in the 3rd division in 2010/11) for an initial five years . Orión FC takes over all sports facilities from Brujas and will play its home games at the Estadio Cuty Monge.
