Orión FC is a soccer club from the province of Cartago , Costa Rica , which currently plays in the third highest Costa Rican division, the Primera División Aficionada .

history

The original Orión FC (1926-1998)

Orión FC was founded in 1926 and played in the Primera División de Costa Rica from 1930 .

Orión remained first class from 1926 until his relegation in the 1968 season, with the exception of the 1959 season, and regularly achieved good placements, especially in the 1940s and early 1950s. In 1938 and 1944 Orión was able to secure the championship title, 6 times (1931, 1940, 1945, 1949, 1951 and 1964) Orión achieved second place.

Orión also brought out a lot of great players in the 1940s and 50s and was known for its excellent team.

In 1935, today's Costa Rican record champion CD Saprissa emerged from the youth department or from Orión's second team .

In 1968 Orión was relegated to the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División , and in 1978 even to the second amateur league (fourth division in total). When Orión got only a draw in the decisive game against relegation in 1998, the club was relegated to the 3rd amateur league. For the then club president Manolo Gómez , this was the decisive moment to roll up the flag of the club that had been so successful in earlier decades.

The revived Orión FC (from 2007)

Second rate and relegation (2007-2011)

In 2007, the Spanish-Costa Rican coach and manager Juan Luis Hernández decided to save Orión FC, a club with a great history and tradition, from oblivion and revived it. Hernández bought the club a franchise for the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División (from the club AD Puntarenense Parrita), with the aim of promotion to the Primera División .

Due to the lack of popularity among the population, Orión changed its seat several times, so they played in Tibás, Cartago, Atenas, Orotina and Curridabat, among others. The club also had several suffixes such as Orión-Tibás and Orión-Periféricos.

In the 2009/2010 season Orión FC took last place and rose to the Primera División Aficionada , amateur football.

Back in first class and direct relegation (2011/12)

When Brujas FC found itself in extreme financial difficulties during the second half of the 2010/11 season and was finally dissolved, Juan Luis Hernández seized the opportunity and signed a contract with the owners of the franchise to use the franchise with Orión for at least 5 years. Furthermore, Hernández agreed with the city of Desamparados to play the home games, like Brujas before, in the Estadio Cuty Monge. Orión is also taking over the youth departments and parts of the Brujas squad.

In order to identify with the population of Desamparados, Hernández gave the club an addition to its name, so that Orión started under the name "Orión FC - Desamparados".

After the mayor of Desamparados, Maureen Fallas, Orión legally enforced the right to use the Estadio Hernán "Cuty" Monge to withdraw. This was possible because the stadium was now fully owned by the city of Desamparados due to Minor Vargas' arrest in the USA - the club was forced to look for a new domicile for the Verano 2012 season. Since January 2012, the club has played its professional team's home games in Tarrazú, San José; The club's soccer school, which has around 900 students, has moved to Hatillo 8.

Orión was not only in last place in the two half-year seasons, but also in the overall table and thus had to play a relegation game in a relegation game against the second division runner-up, AD Carmelita . Orión lost the relegation and thus rose to the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División . The main reasons for the poor second half of the season (8 points in 20 games) were the poor general conditions associated with the unwanted move to Tarrazú and the financially tense situation.

2nd league 2012/2013 and third division

In the 2012/2013 season Orión FC played again in the second-class Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División , now without the addition of "Desamparados" . Orión finished last in the overall table and was relegated to the third-class amateur league Primera División Aficionada .

Since the 2013/14 season, Orión FC has played its home games in the third division near Cartago, where a football school is also operated.
