Liga de Fútbol de Primera División (I)

The Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División is the second highest division in Costa Rican football . It is organized by the second division association LIFUSE on behalf of FEDEFUTBOL (Costa Rican Football Association). The master rises to the Primera División de Costa Rica, the last two placed relegate to the Primera División Aficionada .

Current competition mode (2018/19)

The 2018/19 season will be played out in the following mode in the Apertura-Clausura system:

  • The 18 clubs are divided into two groups of 9 teams based on regional criteria
  • In the first half of the season, the teams meet the 8 other teams in their group in the first and second legs, so that there is a total of 16 games per team. The best two teams in each group and the next four best teams qualify for the playoffs.
  • The playoffs are played from the quarterfinals to the finals in home and away matches.
  • At the end of the season, the Apertura and Clausura winners contest a championship final for promotion to the top division.
  • From the games of the group stage of Apertura and Clausura (a total of 32 games) an overall table is drawn up to determine the relegated amateur football team.
  • If a club gets into debt a total of three times (e.g. failure to show up, failure to pay compulsory fees, etc.), it will automatically be relegated to the third division.

* AD Municipal Ramonense participates with the Deportivo Cartagena-Guanacaste franchise (with purchase option for next season). ** The second team (U23) of LD Alajuelense takes part in the competition with the AD Aserrí franchise, but is not eligible for promotion.
