The Torneo de Copa de Costa Rica was the national cup competition of Costa Rican football . It was organized by the league association UNAFUT on behalf of FEDEFUTBOL (Costa Rican Football Association).
history
From the 1920s to the mid-1990s, cup tournaments were regularly played between the top division teams. These tournaments often had no connection with each other, but were officially organized or approved by FEDEFUTBOL and are therefore included in the statistics. Often there were no sporting criteria for participation, but clubs were invited based on their status.
After years of unsuccessful attempts, mostly the plans failed due to the possible low economic value, UNAFUT and LIFUSE succeeded at the beginning of 2013 in convincing their affiliated clubs to agree to an official national cup competition. So it was decided from now on to hold the tournament annually during the summer break, with participants from the two top divisions. In 2015, the tournament was held over a longer period beyond the summer break.
In April 2016, the league association Unafut announced that the cup competition would not be held for the time being. The reason given was the change in the tournament mode in the first division, which has a strong impact on the calendar.
Attendees
Until 1996
Until 1996, the participants in the cup competition were almost always selected by different criteria. Sometimes the clubs were able to qualify through the first or second league, but especially at the beginning it was mostly invitation tournaments.
2013-2015
Clubs of the Liga de Fútbol de Primera División and the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División have been taking part in the cup competition since 2013 . In 2013 it was the five best clubs of the Liga de Ascenso of the previous season, in 2014 the best clubs from the geographical zones of Guanacaste, North, Caribbean and Central Pacific were invited.
Competition mode
Until 1996
By 1996, the game mode of the cup competition changed significantly. Some knockout rounds were played out, but also group rounds or a combination of both.
2013-2015
The Torneo de Copa de Costa Rica will be played in knockout mode, starting with the round of 16. With the exception of the final, which takes place in the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica , all rounds are played back and forth, with the club that placed higher in the previous season having home rights in the second leg.
In the first round, the five second division teams (including the promoted to the Primera División) compete against the top five of the Primera División (1st First League against 5th Second League, 2nd First League against 4th Second League, etc.). The six other first division clubs play among themselves, whereby the pairings are not determined according to sporting criteria, but rather according to attractiveness and economic efficiency.
The "keys" for the following rounds (from the quarter-finals to the final) are designed so that the four top-ranked first division clubs can only meet in the semi-finals in order to ensure sporting attractiveness.
In 2014, the game mode was changed slightly: the sixteen participating teams initially met in four groups of four based on geographical considerations. Then the group winners played the cup winners in knockout mode, starting in the semi-finals.
In 2015, they returned to the K.0 mode, but the field of participants was expanded to a total of 20 clubs, whereby the best loser reached the next round in the round of 16 and in the quarter-finals.
