Club Sport La Libertad , also known as CS La Libertad for short , is a Costa Rican soccer club from the capital San José .

history

Pioneer of Costa Rican football

The club, founded in 1905, was an important pioneer in the early epoch of Costa Rican football and also had one of the most successful football teams, winning a total of six championship titles between 1925 and 1946 and three times cup winners.

La Libertad is one of seven founding members of the Primera División introduced in 1921 and played the very first game in the history of this league, which was won 1-0 on July 3, 1921 at Sociedad Gimnástica Limonese .

The successful years

La Libertad went down in Costa Rican football history as the first cup winner in 1925. Because the club won the championship title for the first time in the same season, it was also the first double winner in Costa Rican club football.

In 1926 the championship title was successfully defended and in 1929 the second double in the club's history was won.

After the sixth and last championship title in the club's history was won in 1946, the team made it to the final in 1947, but lost to CS Herediano .

The decline

In 1948, La Libertad occupied the last place in the table for the first time with the tied SG Española and had to prevail in the preliminary round against Española to avoid the relegation games.

In 1949, La Libertad again finished last, had to go into relegation for the first time and failed against CS Uruguay , but was still allowed to stay in the first division.

In the 1950s, La Libertad initially recovered and regularly took a place in the secured midfield. The beginning of the end began in 1958 when the Libertos again landed in last place, this time leading to direct relegation. In 1959 they were immediately promoted again, but followed in 1960 by renewed (and this time permanent) relegation from the top division. La Libertad currently plays in the third-rate Primera División Aficionada .
