Evaristo Murillo Chaverri (born February 14, 1922 in Santa Bárbara de Heredia ; † November 2005 in Orizaba , Veracruz , Mexico ), also known by the nickname Burro , was a Costa Rican soccer goalkeeper who came to Mexico as a young man and there celebrated his greatest successes.

Life

Murillo's first engagement as a professional player was with CS La Libertad , with whom he went on a trip to Mexico in March 1942 and played four test matches against Mexican club teams ( Marte and Moctezuma ) and combined teams ( España - Asturias and the Selección Jalisco ). Especially at the UD Moctezuma, his brilliant parades left such a lasting impression that the Orizaba-based club, which is dominated by the brewery of the same name, signed him in the summer of 1943. After Murillo had guarded the gate at CS Herediano in 1942/43 , he was under contract with Moctezuma between 1943 and probably 1950 and won the Mexican Cup twice and the Supercup once with this club . Murillo was one of only four players who were there in both 1943 and 1947 in the greatest successes in the club's history (the cup wins and the subsequent Supercup finals). The other three were midfielder Dolores Araujo and two strikers Alfonso Arnáez and Honorio Arteaga .

After Moctezuma had retired from the Mexican professional league in 1950 , Murillo switched to CD Veracruz and two years later to CD Zacatepec , with which he won the Mexican championship in the 1954/55 season.

After finishing his active career, he returned to Orizaba, where he coached Orizaba FC , which played in the Mexican second division between 1959 and 1968 . The city at the foot of the highest mountain in Mexico became his new home, where he died in November 2005 at the age of 83.

  4. It is possible that Murillo also belonged to the CD Veracruz master squad in 1950, because according to the stated main source ( memento of the original from July 18, 2012 in the web archive archive.today ) Info: The archive link was automatically inserted and not yet checked. In the list of the 1949/50 championship squad listed on page 489 of the Libro de Oro del Fútbol Mexicano , Murillo is not mentioned. In addition, the main source puts his activity at Moctezuma at seven years and dates his start there on July 10, 1943 (at the Supercup finals held on September 26, 1943, Murillo was verifiably in the goal; see The Mexican Supercup finals at RSSSF ) . In this respect, it seems more likely that Murillo did not move to Veracruz until 1950, especially since the main source mentions a two-year activity in the service of CD Veracruz and describes his subsequent move to Zacatepec, which according to Libro de Oro del Fútbol Mexicano (p. 636) happened in 1952. It can therefore be assumed that Murillo was under contract with CD Veracruz between 1950 and 1952. The historical ambiguity of his affiliation with Veracruz may also be due to the fact that he was a guest player in at least two occasions with the Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz in 1947, when they played the opening game of the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes against the Racing Club de in January 1947 Avellaneda disputed (cf. According to the main source cited, he was under contract with Zacatepec for four years, so it can be assumed that he let his career end in the 1955/56 season. @1@ 2Template: Webachiv / IABot / wvw.nacion.com@1@ 2Template: Dead Link / www.mediotiempo.com.mx
