The Primera División Aficionada is the third highest division in Costa Rican football . It is organized by the amateur football association LINAFA on behalf of FEDEFUTBOL (Costa Rican Football Association). The master moves up to the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División, the last ten in the group move up to the Tercera División Aficionada .

Current competition mode

  • First the 79 participants are divided into ten groups of 8 (one of 7) teams.
  • In the first round, a single round with back and forth legs is played to determine the grouping for the second round.
  • The second round is played in the same mode as the previous one. The three best clubs in each group qualify for the round of 32. An overall table is also created for each first round group to determine the relegated teams in each group and the two best thirds in the group who progress to the sixteenth finals.
  • The 32 teams qualified for the playoffs play in knockout mode from the champions and promoted to the Liga de Ascenso. The matches beginning with the sixteenth finals are played in home and away matches.
