The Súper Copa de Costa Rica is the Supercup of Costa Rican football . It is organized by the UNAFUT league association on behalf of FEDEFUTBOL (Costa Rican Football Association). At the moment the competition is temporarily not being held.
history
For several years there were efforts to introduce a cup competition, after there had already been one in previous years with first and second division teams, but the plans repeatedly failed, not least due to a lack of sponsors.
Since the national football association, FEDEFUTBOL , did not manage to launch a cup competition, the members of UNAFUT decided in early 2012 to play a Supercup shortly before the start of the season in order to make Costa Rican football more attractive to fans. On June 6, 2012, the Supercup was officially adopted at the UNAFUT General Assembly.
When an official national cup competition with clubs from the first and second division was launched in 2013, it was decided to temporarily put the Supercup on hold. Since two champions are chosen per season in the Primera División, but only one cup competition takes place, one of the two champions would be preferred.
Should there be only one champions in the first division in the future, or two cup tournaments per year, the Supercup would be held again.
Attendees
In the only game to date for the Supercup in 2012, the two champions of the previous season (Invierno and Verano) met each other, as there was no national cup competition at the time.
Competition mode
The two participants, the champions of Inviernos and Veranos of the past season, compete against each other in a single game at the Costa Rican national stadium, the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica . The winner gets the Costa Rican Supercup.
