Competition mode

The cup competition was held from July to November in knockout mode, from the sixteenth finals to the final. In the first two rounds, as well as in the final, the winner was decided in a single game over 90 minutes (afterwards, if necessary, extra time and penalty shoot-out), while the quarter-finals and semi-finals were played with a round trip.

Since 20 clubs took part in the tournament, the best loser qualified for the next round both in the round of 16 and in the quarter-finals in order to reduce the field of participants to four teams by the semi-finals.

The fixtures were determined in each round by the Executive and Organizing Committees, taking into account sporting, financial and geographical criteria. Basically, the second division clubs have home rights and meet FPD teams.

financing

The tournament was financed primarily by the main sponsor Banco Popular and the secondary sponsors Coca-Cola and Centrum. In addition, the ticket sales were carried out centrally by the league association UNAFUT and the proceeds went into the same pot. In addition, UNAFUT provided parts of its annual budget.

In total, the organization of the tournament cost 200 million colones (approx. 400,000 US dollars). The logistics (renting the stadium, transport, etc.) and the prize money were financed from the income from sponsorship and ticket sales.

Round of 16

The ten encounters in the sixteenth-finals were decided in a single game, with a draw going straight to penalties after 90 minutes.

The second division had home rights in this round. In the case of Guanacasteca, the game was moved to the nearest Liberia due to problems with the floodlights. Escazú faced the UCR at the Colleya Fonseca Stadium as their own stadium did not meet the requirements.
