Guadalupe FC is a football club from Goicoechea , Province of San José , Costa Rica , which plays in the highest Costa Rican league, the Liga de Fútbol de Primera División .

history

Belén FC (until 2017)

Belén FC was founded on June 13, 1973 under the name AD Calle Flores as the first football club in the canton of Belén. After 14 years in amateur football , Calle Flores managed to become third division champion in 1987 and thus to fight for a place in the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División .

After two seasons in the second division, the club was renamed AD Belén in 1990. 1992/93 Belén stood for the first time in the final of the 2nd division, which Belén won 4-1 and 1-0 and thus rose for the first time in the Primera División de Costa Rica .

Belén remained first class for 5 years and only achieved mediocre placements in the years of first class, the greatest success was a 5th place. In 2004/05 Belén was once again first class, having won the second division final against Deportivo Cartagena the previous season . Belén was then last and was relegated back to the second division.

In the following years Belén got increasingly into financial difficulties and the level of sport also fell bit by bit and only insufficient placements were achieved.

In the 2009/10 season the club received financial help from businessman Minor Vargas and from the 2010/11 season the club was practically financially dependent on him. Vargas also financed the restoration of the Polideportivo Belén stadium and had it fitted with artificial turf. For the 2010/11 season, the club was also renamed Corporación Deportiva Belén Siglo XXI (CD Belén Siglo XXI for short). With Vargas' money, Belén was able to strengthen its squad and in the Apertura the club won the runner-up title behind Deportivo Cartagena. After Vargas was arrested in the US for fraud (at least $ 620 million), the club was left with no funding. It was decided to play the second half of the season anyway and from March 2011 the players were no longer paid. The team and coaching staff decided to stick together until the end and even paid for the journey to the games themselves. Mainly due to the great solidarity, Belén finally managed to win the Clausura and qualify for the final for promotion. This was won against Deportivo Cartagena and thus Belén rose for the third time in the first division. Had the club not been promoted, it would have had to break up due to the financial situation.

Belén has been playing in the Liga de Fútbol de Primera División , the highest Costa Rican division, since the 2011/12 season . In the meantime, the club went under the name Belén-Bridgestone FC.

Guadalupe FC (since 2017)

Due to a lack of support from the local / municipal government, sponsors and fans, the owners of the club decided to either sell it for the 2017/18 season or to find a new place to stay. Ultimately, it was a decision in favor of moving to Guadalupe in the Goicoechea canton, a few kilometers north of the capital of San José. Accordingly, the club was renamed Guadalupe FC.

successes

Stadion

Guadalupe plays its home games at the Estadio José Joaquín "Colleya" Fonseca in Goicoechea, which offers space for around 4500 spectators.

When the club was still based in Belén, it traditionally played its home games in the town of Estadio Polideportivo Belén , which had a capacity of around 3,000 and was renovated in early 2010. In the past, the club also played its home games in the national stadium and in the now dilapidated Estadio Pedregal.
