UCR FC is a football club from San Pedro , Montes de Oca , Province of San José , Costa Rica , which plays in the highest Costa Rican league, the Liga de Fútbol de Primera División .
history
In 1941, the then Costa Rican President, Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia , ordered the founding of a club to represent the Universidad de Costa Rica , or UCR for short. Calderón put through the football association FEDEFUTBOL , which the club , which was initially still playing under the name Universidad Nacional, was able to take part in the Primera División de Costa Rica's game without having previously entered the second division.
In 1943, in the second year after the club was founded, the UCR managed to win the championship as a blatant outsider, which is the only success to date.
In 1956, the UCR rose to the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División , in 1973 they were promoted to the top division again, where the club stayed only three years until 1976 and relegated back to the second division.
Since 1994 the football club CF Universidad de Costa Rica is officially a division of the Asociación Deportiva Universitaria. In 2003 the Universidad de Costa Rica and the CF Universidad de Costa Rica signed a cooperation agreement stating that the club officially represents the university. Furthermore, this contract stipulates that the CF UCR is the first-time user of the Estadio Ecológico and that the football club may use the various facilities of the university.
After 31 years in the second division, they were promoted back to the Primera División de Costa Rica in 2007 , where the club stayed until 2011 and, above all, fought against relegation to the second division.
In the 2010/11 season, the UCR finally finished last with 23 points in the overall table and thus rose after 4 years in the first class back to the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División.
This time the Universitarios only needed two seasons to return to the Primera División. The UCR won the championship final of the 2nd division against AS Puma Generaleña .
The club's franchise has been managed by a Colombian company since mid-2017, which now owns the majority of the voting shares, but the club still represents the university. The club name was slightly changed to UCR FC.
