Asociación Deportiva Santos de Guápiles is a football club from Guápiles , Canton Pococí , Province Limón , Costa Rica , which plays in the highest Costa Rican league, the Liga de Fútbol de Primera División .

history

In 1961 some hobby footballers from Guápiles decided to found a club. Since the Brazilian club FC Santos played two friendly matches with the legendary Pelé in Costa Rica in the same year , the footballers named their new club, which they founded on November 10 of the same year, Santos de Guápiles.

In the early years Santos played in the third amateur league, later in the second.

In 1997 Santos rose to the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División . Already in the second year in the second division, 1999, the Santos de Guápiles managed to rise to the top division, the Primera División de Costa Rica . The club stayed there for 9 years until Santos was relegated back to the second division in 2008. Thanks to the immediate resurgence, Santos has been top notch again since 2009.

In the years Santos changed the club name a few times, so the club was now also called Santos FC and Pococí 2000. The club structure also changed several times, sometimes he was a member of the cantonal sports committee, sometimes it was a private club. At the moment Santos is a semi-private association. The club is again owned by the canton of Pococí, but is run by shareholders.

The club's greatest sporting successes are the vice championships in the 2001/02 season and in Verano 2012

Others

In addition to the Santos de Guápiles, there are two other professional clubs in the canton of Pococí, which take part in the second Costa Rican league, the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División . These are AD Cariari Pococí and AD La Suerte .

Stadion

Santos de Guápiles plays his home games in the 3,000-seat Estadio Ebal Rodríguez . On special occasions, such as participation in the finals in Verano 2012, the capacity of the stadium can be expanded to up to 6,000 seats with auxiliary stands.
