The Asociación Deportiva San Carlos is a football club from Ciudad Quesada , Canton San Carlos , Province Alajuela , Costa Rica , which plays in the highest Costa Rican league, the Liga de Fútbol de Primera División .

history

At the beginning of the 1960s, the two associations of the canton of San Carlos, "El Refugio" and "El Maravilla", merged to form the "Sancarlenic Selection". When the selection from San Carlos rose to the Primera División de Costa Rica in 1965, the club AD San Carlos was founded on May 9, 1965 from the Sancarlenische selection.

In the first division San Carlos was able to establish itself in the lower midfield and managed to keep the class for 25 years in a row. In 2004, San Carlos was relegated for the second time, but returned to the top football league in the country after only two years in the second division.

The biggest successes so far are the runner-up titles in the Verano 2010 and Verano 2011.

After mixed placements in recent seasons, San Carlos finished last in the overall table in the 2012/13 season and was relegated to the Liga de Ascenso.

In the second division, San Carlos only remained three seasons. In the 2015/16 season, the club managed to win the championship and thus returned to the top division.

After relegation again after just one year in 2017, he was promoted to the first division again within just one season.

Others

AD San Carlos took part under the name "AD Zona Norte" (previously San Carlos Zona Norte) in the game operation of the second Costa Rican league, the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División . The majority of the players came from the youth of AD San Carlos and should collect match practice in order to later play for the first team. With the name Zona Norte, AD San Carlos wanted to identify with the whole region and underline that the goal of the club is to give young players from the region the opportunity to gain a foothold in professional football. However, the project failed due to a lack of audience interest, so San Carlos sold the second division franchise for the 2011/12 season to AD Juventud Escazuceña .

Stadion

San Carlos plays its home games in the 1966 built Estadio Carlos Ugalde . The stadium is owned by the Canton of San Carlos. The stadium has had artificial turf since 2010, so that there are no frequent cancellations during the rainy season as in previous years.
