Alajuela is a province in northern Costa Rica on the border with Nicaragua . It extends over an area of 9754 km² and has a population of 848,146 (2011). The capital of the province is also called Alajuela .
Neighboring provinces are (clockwise) Heredia , San José , Puntarenas and Guanacaste .
