Guanacaste is the north-westernmost province of Costa Rica . The province covers an area of 10,141 km² and has a population of 326,953 (2011). The capital of the province is Liberia .

Geography and nature

Guanacaste borders the Pacific Ocean to the west . The northern border forms the national border with Nicaragua . Eastern neighboring province is Alajuela , southeast Puntarenas .

Because of the comparatively dry climate, Guanacaste is the center of Costa Rican cattle breeding. The Golfo de Papagayo on the Pacific coast is the main development area for tourism . Increasingly large hotels are being built here for mainly North American package tourists.

At the same time, a wide strip, from the western tip at Cape Santa Helena to the active volcanic peaks of the Orosí and the Rincón de la Vieja , has been protected as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1999 under the name Area de Conservación Guanacaste . The area mainly consists of the three national parks of the province:

Some of the more than 300 stone balls of Costa Rica were found in the province.
