Puntarenas is a province of Costa Rica . It is located in the west of the country and takes up most of its Pacific coast. Neighboring provinces are (clockwise) Guanacaste , Alajuela , San José and Limón and the State Panama .
The capital is Puntarenas . The province has an area of 11,266 km² and 410,929 (2011) inhabitants.
The province also includes the islands of Isla del Caño (20 km away) and Isla del Coco (500 km away), probably the template for the novel Treasure Island . The "Inter-American Highway", the Central American part of the Panamericana , runs through the province. Most of the 300+ stone balls of Costa Rica were found in the south .
