Buenos Aires is located in the province of Puntarenas the Central American country Costa Rica and is the canton capital of the eponymous canton , the 12 districts included. The city has a connection to the Panamericana and is therefore easily accessible by car.

Geographically, the canton is determined by the Diques and Térraba rivers and the Cordillera de Talamanca - a section of the American Cordilleras. A sight here are the perfectly shaped spherical granite rocks: some of the stone spheres of Costa Rica .

The district was originally inhabited by Boruca Indians. Settlement by people of European descent began in 1870 when the construction of a road from EL Guarco to Boruca began. Within the district there are some settlements of various indigenous peoples ( Bribri , Cabecar , Boruca).

The economy is shaped by tourism and pineapple cultivation. In the tourism sector, the interesting offers of ecotourism can serve as models for a broader economic base in the region. In these projects, tourists are given the opportunity to stay in the environment of the indigenous peoples, which also includes the acquisition of knowledge about organic agriculture.

However, pineapple cultivation by the American Monsanto group still dominates the livelihoods of Buenos Aires. Due to the monopoly of the group, the working conditions are unacceptable from the workers' point of view. In addition, according to their presentation, the environmental laws are also disregarded by the group, so that insecticides from the fields get into the water of the rivers and, according to the findings of the Ministry of Health, make the water inedible. To enforce their demands for decent working conditions and a healthy environment, the plantation workers founded the independent union Sitrupindeco .

There are plans to dammed the Térraba River for electricity generation. This would create a large lake. This project could not be realized so far due to the lack of funding.
