Location of the main Bribri reserves in Costa Rica

Bribri is a small indigenous people in Costa Rica . About 5200 Bribri live in a village and an original settlement in the rainforest. This settlement is about two days' walk from the village and cannot be reached by a road. There are only about 500 people left in this part, they are still hunters and gatherers. The Bribri manage their territory themselves.

The Bribri have their own language that belongs to the western branch of the Chibcha languages . Originally they did not know any script, but took over the characters from the Spanish. There is also a Bribri dictionary. In the first half of the 20th century a dictionary "Bribri-Deutsch" was published, probably by German-speaking missionaries, but no further work was done on it.

With the Bribri, the men are responsible for the hunt, while the women are mainly responsible for the other work. To hunt, men must perform a ritual to purify their soul; A shaman is asked to determine the hunting area .

There are projects to enable the Bribri to improve their living standards.
