Puntarenas is a port city in the west of the Central American state of Costa Rica . Puntarenas is the most important port on the Pacific coast of the country and has 40,000 inhabitants (2001). The city is located at the entrance to the Gulf of Nicoya , opposite the Nicoya Peninsula on a narrow headland.

This one pair of trains transports day trippers from the San José metropolitan area to the Pacific on Sundays.
