The Isla del Caño is a small island off the west coast of Costa Rica in the Pacific Ocean . It is part of the Province of Puntarenas and the Corcovado National Park .
geography
Isla del Caño is located 16 km west of Punta Llorona on the Osa Peninsula . The island is 3.2 km long and a maximum of 1.5 km wide and has an area of 3.0 km². Apart from a permanently manned ranger station, the island is uninhabited. It is surrounded by a steep coast and rises to a maximum level of 123 meters in the interior. There is a lighthouse at the western end .

The coral reefs and marine fauna (rays, dolphins, sea turtles, whales and numerous species of fish) around the island are suitable for snorkeling and diving. The island's beaches are also popular. One -hour crossings are possible by boat from Drake Bay as well as from Manuel Antonio , but from there connected with a longer boat trip.

The protected area of the island, founded in 1978, 15 km off the coast, includes around 3 km² of land and 58 km² of sea area. The island is dense with tropical rainforest . There is an abundance of flora, 13 different land bird and several marine bird species . The only mammals are pigs and pakas .
history
In pre-Columbian times, Brunca Indians built tombs, the excavations of which can be viewed. Some of the stone balls from Costa Rica have also been found on the island . On March 16, 1579, Sir Francis Drake landed on the island during his circumnavigation, repairs his ship ' Golden Hinde ' and stashes wood, provisions and water.
