AS Puma Generaleña is a football club from Pérez Zeledón , San José , Costa Rica , which plays in the second Costa Rican division, the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División .

history

In 2010 the brothers Marvin and Rigoberto Chinchilla founded a football club in Pérez Zeledón, which was intended to be an alternative to the local first division club AD Municipal Pérez Zeledón . The aim was not only to locate the newly founded club in Pérez, but also to firmly root it in this city. A football school was founded that covers the entire region. Instead of big companies, small local companies are the sponsors, most of the players come from the city themselves and entry to home games is deliberately kept very low.

The club name AS Puma Generaleña is made up of three different elements that were important for the Chinchilla brothers: As children they admired the Italian capital club AS Roma, hence the "AS" in the club name. The team in which both played in their youth called themselves "Pumas" and in Pérez Zeledón there was once a club called "Generaleña" (AD Municipal Generaleña and AD Pérez Zeledón merged in the 90s in order not to compete with each other and play today as AD Municipal Pérez Zeledón in the top division), which was known for its proximity to the local population.

The club bought the second division franchise from AD El Roble , a small club from the province of Alajuela, and was able to participate in the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División from the 2011/2012 season . In the three seasons in the second-highest division, Pumas was able to celebrate considerable successes, including constant playoff participation, and finally crowned themselves in 2014 as the second division champion with promotion to the first division.

2014/15 AS Puma played his first season in the Liga de Fútbol de Primera División , the highest Costa Rican division. After finishing last in Invierno 2014 and 10th in Verano 2015, the newcomer immediately relegated to the Liga de Ascenso.

Stadion

AS Puma plays its home games in the municipal Estadio Municipal Keylor Navas, which has a capacity of around 6000 spectators. Puma shares this stadium with local rivals AD Municipal. Before that, in the second division, AS Puma played its home games in the small Estadio Polideportivo.
