General

Uruguay's club colors are yellow and black. Initially, the club's official colors were red and black, but since competitor LD Alajuelense was already using this color combination, Uruguay changed the club colors to yellow and black in honor of CA Peñarol from Montevideo.

history

Uruguay de Coronado is one of the most traditional football clubs in Costa Rica and one of the most popular in the province of San José. The club was founded on January 3, 1936 and named in honor of the world champion of 1930 after the South American country Uruguay . The club colors are yellow and black in honor of the Uruguayan club CA Peñarol (see "General").

In 1942 Coronado was first champion of the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División and took part in a relegation round against LD Alajuelense , where they lost two of three games and thus had to stay in the second division. Eight years later, Uruguay managed to become second division champions again, this time they were able to prevail in the relegation against CS La Libertad and played in the Primera División de Costa Rica from the 1950 season .

In the 1959 season, Uruguay finished last and was relegated to the second division, but by the 1960 season Uruguay was back in the first division.

In the 1963 season Uruguay managed to become Costa Rican champions for the only time in the club's history, which is the club's greatest success to this day. In 1964, Coronado was officially the best Central American club.

In the following 2 years, many regular players left the club in the direction of the big clubs and as a result, Uruguay rose only three years after winning the championship title in 1967 to the second division, where they immediately succeeded in direct promotion.

The joy of the immediate resurgence did not last long, however, after only two seasons Uruguay returned to the second division, where they were even passed through to the third division. In 1973 they were then taken back into the second division by a resolution of the football association.

However, Uruguay had to wait more than 10 years to return to the first division, only in the 1987/88 season Uruguay won the championship title of the second division again and then played in the Primera División up to and including the 1991/92 season .

This was followed by 20 long years in the Liga de Ascenso-Segunda División , in which Coronado barely missed promotion a few times, but also managed to prevent one or the other from relegation to the third division.

After the end of the 2009/10 season, the former Costa Rican international Paolo Wanchope bought the club with the aim of returning to the top class as quickly as possible and building a good youth department as a basis for future teams. After only two years of targeted investments in a young team, Wanchope managed to become second division champions with Uruguay in the 2011/12 season. So Uruguay is returning to the Primera División after 20 years for the 2012/13 season .

In the Verano 2016, Coronado finished last and only slipped to the relegation zone on the last day of the 2015-16 overall standings. Thus, Uruguay has been back in the Liga de Ascenso since the 2016-17 season.
