Alexandre Borges Guimarães (born November 7, 1959 in Maceió , Brazil ) is a former Brazilian - Costa Rican soccer player and current coach.
Born in Brazil, Guimarães has lived in Costa Rica since he was 11 years old , and took his citizenship in 1984. He played for this country as a player at the 1990 World Cup and reached the round of 16. Guimarães has played a total of 16 international matches. In 1982, 1988 and 1989 he became the Costa Rican champion.
After the 2002 World Cup, where he was the coach of Costa Rica, he resigned, but took the post again in 2005 at the request of the association.
After the preliminary round at the 2006 World Cup , Guimarães announced his resignation again in early July 2006, in response to media criticism in Costa Rica and threats against his family. In November 2006 he then accepted the post as national coach of the national soccer team of Panama . After failing to qualify for the World Cup, he was released in June 2008.
In the 2009/10 season, Guimarães coached Al-Wasl , a club from Dubai that plays in the top division of the United Arab Emirates .
As in the 1990s, Guimarães will train CD Saprissa from the 2011/12 season .
In June 2019, Alexandre Guimarães was introduced as the new coach by the Colombian club América de Cali .
