The Panamanian national soccer team is the national soccer team of the Central American state of Panama .

history

After the Panamanian national soccer team had been one of the worse teams of the continental association CONCACAF for years, they could achieve considerable success in recent years. Until the successful qualification for the soccer world championship 2018 the team had not managed to qualify for a soccer world championship , but Panama had already reached the final qualifying round in the qualification for the world cup 2006 . At the CONCACAF Gold Cup , the team achieved 2nd place in 2005 , they had only been defeated in the final of the US national soccer team after a penalty shoot-out.

As part of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the team met El Salvador in the second round of the CONCACAF zone . After the first leg ended 1-0 for Panama, the second leg was lost 3-1 and Panama was eliminated. As part of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , the team was able to work its way up to the fourth round. There, however, she retired shortly after a loss to the USA.

The team finished 38th in the official FIFA world rankings, their best ever ranking in April 2013.

On January 9, 2016, Panama qualified for the Copa América Centenario 2016 by beating Cuba 4-0 .

On October 10, 2017, the national team managed to qualify directly for a soccer World Cup for the first time. The team benefited from the USA's 2-1 defeat against Trinidad and Tobago.

As a result of the economic problems for the football association caused by the COVID-19 pandemic , Américo Gallego was dismissed as national coach on April 14, 2020. Thomas Christiansen was signed as his successor in mid-July 2020 until qualification for the 2022 World Cup .
