  • The qualification (or preliminary round) for the final round of the 2022 World Cup will take place from 2019 to 2022. All 211 current FIFA members are expected to participate. The draws for the qualifying groups will take place individually in each confederation from 2019 to 2020.

    The starting places for the final round will be allocated as follows:

    Two of the participants are determined in intercontinental playoffs. Which associations compete against each other will also be drawn on an unknown date.

    European Zone / UEFA

    On December 9, 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced that Russia would be banned from all major sporting events for the next four years because of manipulated data from the Moscow laboratory. However, the Russian national team could take part in the qualification as the ban only applies to the finals. If Russia qualified, Russian footballers could possibly take part in the final round as a neutral team, that is, without the Russian flag and anthem.

    African Zone / CAF

    As Réunion and Zanzibar are not FIFA members, only 54 CAF members take part in the qualification.

    First round
    The teams placed 27 to 54 start in the first round.

    Second round
    The teams placed 1 to 26 start in the second round.

    Asian Zone and Australia / AFC

    As the Northern Mariana Islands are not a FIFA member, only 46 AFC members take part in the qualification. The first two qualifying rounds also serve as qualifications for the 2023 Asian Cup .

    The teams placed 35 to 46 entered the first round.

    South American Zone / CONMEBOL

    All ten teams belonging to the South American football association CONMEBOL take part in the qualification. Due to the corona pandemic , the start of the qualification for the 10 participants (originally March 2020) has been postponed several times. FIFA plans to start in October 2020.

    North, Central American and Caribbean Zones / CONCACAF

    All 35 CONCACAF teams that are also members of the world governing body FIFA take part in the qualification.

    First round
    The teams ranked 6th to 35th start in the first round.

    Third round
    The teams ranked 1 to 5 start in the third round.
