The Maldivian national football team is the national team of the Maldives , an Asian island nation , and is run by the Football Association of Maldives . It is one of the most unsuccessful teams in Asia. Nevertheless, football is the most popular sport in the country. The Maldives has not yet managed to qualify for a soccer World Cup or the soccer Asian Cup. The top placement in the FIFA World Ranking was the 126th place the team finished in July 2006. The Maldives have only played against Asian teams since joining FIFA. For the first time - on October 13, 2004 against Vietnam - they won against a team in the top 100 of the FIFA world rankings. All other victories were won against teams ranked 111 to 199.
The team's greatest success was winning the 2008 South Asian Championship in their own country.
