Robert Sime "Roy" Aitken (born November 24, 1958 in Irvine , Scotland ) is a former football player ( midfielder ) and today's coach. He was active for 14 years for Celtic Glasgow (from 1987 to 1990 as captain) and also played for Newcastle United , FC St. Mirren and FC Aberdeen . With the Scottish national team he took part in the soccer world championships in 1986 and 1990 , but retired with this in each case in the preliminary round.

He has been a coach since the end of his active career. From 1995 to 1997 he coached Aberdeen FC , with whom he won the Scottish League Cup in 1996. In June 2003 he became assistant coach at Aston Villa in Birmingham under David O'Leary . After an offer from the Scottish Football Association, he left Aston Villa to be assistant coach of the Scottish national team from January 2006 to November 2007 , when he followed Alex McLeish to Birmingham City , where Aitken continued to work as his assistant coach. In July 2010 he left Birmingham City again to work as an assistant coach at the al-Ahli Club in Dubai until May 2011.
