Richard "Ricki" Herbert , CNZM (born April 10, 1961 in Auckland ) is a New Zealand soccer coach and former soccer player. Herbert is the former national coach of his country and was also club coach at Wellington Phoenix until February 2013 . He voluntarily gave up the coaching position in Wellington because his club was only in the last place in the Australian A-League .

Herbert played for various New Zealand and Australian soccer teams and between 1984 and 1986 for Wolverhampton Wanderers in England. During his active career, Herbert completed a total of 61 international matches (7 goals) for New Zealand between 1980 and 1989 and took part in the 1982 World Cup.

Herbert has been a trainer since 1990. In 1996 he took over the coaching position at Central United in the '' National Summer League '' and won the Chatham Cup with this team in 1997 and 1998 , and in 1999 Central United became New Zealand champions.

From 1999 the New Zealand Football Association hired Herbert as a coach for various national teams. In February 2005 Herbert was appointed national coach after having been Mick Waitt 's assistant since 2003 .

In December 2006, he took over the coaching position for the New Zealand representative in the A-League , the New Zealand Knights , after the club's owners had their license withdrawn. After the license for the 2007/08 season was transferred to the Wellington Phoenix, he became the team's coach.

With the national team, he took part as a coach at the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa. There, his team finished third in Group F (with Italy , Slovakia and Paraguay ) after three draws.

In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, his team failed in the play-offs against Mexico , which resulted in his resignation from the coaching position.

On August 19, 2014, the signing of the contract with NorthEast United FC from Guwahati was announced from the opening season of the Indian Super League .
