The Chatham Cup (or currently ASB Chatham Cup ) is a New Zealand soccer competition that has been held in knockout mode since 1923.

history

In 1922, the trophy was presented to the New Zealand Football Association as a gift from the British HMS Chatham crew . This was due to the hospitality the crew received on a previous visit to New Zealand.

The trophy is based on the model of the FA Cup .

mode

The Chatham Cup has been played between 120 and 150 New Zealand teams since 1923. Only in the years 1937 and 1941 to 1944 did the competition not take place. There are always two teams facing each other in KO mode. If a game is tied after 90 minutes and no winner has been determined after extra time, the decision will be made by penalty shoot-out.

In the past, additional replay games were scheduled (1972) or the trophy was split (1952). From 1986 to 1988 both a return leg and a return leg were played, with the winner being determined in the event of a tie based on the away goals scored .
