history
As early as 1966, Derrick Mansbridge and Fred Haydon decided to start a football club. In the four years leading up to the founding of the New Zealand National Soccer League in 1970, plans took shape. In 1970 the club finally took part in the competition for the first time. The founders chose The Rams as a nickname based on the English club Derby County . 1972 Christchurch United reached the first title in the club's history by winning the Chatham Cup . The first championship followed in 1972. The seventies are one of the successful times of the Rams, altogether the New Zealand championship title could be won twice, the cup competition four times. In the 1980s and the beginning of the 90s, another three championship titles and two cup wins followed. In 1998 the club was relegated to the Mainland Premier League and is currently playing in the Christchurch Casino Men's Division One.
With six championship titles, Christchurch and Mt Wellington are the most successful clubs in New Zealand.
