The New Zealand national soccer team , also called All Whites because of their jerseys based on the All Blacks , is the selection team of the Pacific island nation of New Zealand .
The national team falls under the administration of the New Zealand Football Association .
The footballers achieved their greatest successes to date with qualifications for the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 and in South Africa in 2010 .
history
The beginnings
The first international game of a New Zealand selection took place on July 23, 1904 in Dunedin on the old Caledonian Ground. New Zealand was still a British colony at that time. The New Zealanders lost the game against the selection from New South Wales 1-0, but were able to earn a 3-3 draw in a renewed clash that took place seven days later at Athletic Park in Wellington. The following year the selection played a few more games in New Zealand and Australia.
No further game by a New Zealand national team was played until 1921. The first official international match took place on June 17, 1922. In the Carisbrook in Dunedin , the team achieved a 3-1 win over Australia.
Balance: Football World Cup
The New Zealand national soccer team first took part in a qualification for the soccer world championship in 1970 . In two "knockout games" the team met Israel , which at that time was still playing in the Oceania zone. The first leg was lost 4-0, the second leg 0-2. Thus New Zealand was eliminated in the first round.
In qualifying for the 1974 World Cup in Germany , New Zealand had to compete in a group with Australia , Indonesia and Iraq . After completing the group games, New Zealand drew three times, two against Australia and one draw against Indonesia. All other games were lost, against Iraq even 4-0. So New Zealand was eliminated as the group bottom.
The team also remained unsuccessful in qualifying for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina . Although New Zealand won both games against Chinese Taipei 6: 0, they only played a draw against Australia and lost the decisive game 1: 3. The second rank in the table meant the end.
New Zealand took part in a world tournament for the first time at the 1982 World Cup in Spain . In the first qualifying round they prevailed as group winners against Australia, Chinese Taipei, Fiji and Indonesia. New Zealand finished second in the Asia / Oceania zone against China , Kuwait and Saudi Arabia , tied with China. On January 10, 1982 there was then a playoff for participation in the World Cup finals against China. New Zealand won it 2-1 and thus bought the ticket to Spain.
The World Cup began for the team on June 15, 1982 in Málaga against Scotland . New Zealand lost this game 5-2, with Steve Sumner and Steve Wooddin scoring for the Oceanians . The second opponent was the Soviet Union on June 19, also in Málaga , against which they lost 3-0. On June 23, New Zealand finally lost 4-0 to the team from Brazil in Seville and was eliminated from the group's bottom in the preliminary round of the World Cup finals.
The 1986 World Cup could not be achieved. New Zealand was eliminated in the first round of qualification as group third behind Australia and Israel, as well as Chinese Taipei. The highlight was a 5-0 win over Chinese Taipei.
In qualifying for the 1990 World Cup in Italy , New Zealand defeated Chinese Taipei 4: 0 and 4: 1 in the first round in two games, making it into the final round of the Oceania zone. But a poor performance in the group of three with Australia and Israel and only one win from four games meant the premature end.
Participation in the football World Cup in 1994 failed to Australia. After Fiji and Vanuatu were defeated in the preliminary round , Australia were defeated in two games with 0: 1 and 0: 3.
At the 1998 World Cup , New Zealand was set for the second qualifying round. Again they met Fiji, which were defeated 1-0 and 5-0. Against the second group opponent, the national team of Papua New Guinea , New Zealand surprisingly lost their first game 1-0. The second leg again ended clearly 7-0 for New Zealand. Again there were two playoffs against Australia, but the first leg was lost 3-0. The second leg ended 2-0 and New Zealand again missed qualifying for the World Cup finals.
The qualification for the Soccer World Cup 2002 in Japan and South Korea started successfully for New Zealand, the first round was finished as group winners before Tahiti , the Solomon Islands , Vanuatu and the Cook Islands with four wins from four games. As in 1994 and 1998, there were two relegation games against Australia, both of which were lost (0: 2 and 1: 4).
The 2006 World Cup could not reach New Zealand again. But this time you weren't even in the relegation against Australia. After the opening game against Australia was just lost 0-1, New Zealand won 3-0 against the Solomon Islands. On June 2, 2004, they lost 4-2 against the blatant underdog from Vanuatu. Tahiti was dealt 10-0 two days later, Fiji also defeated 2-0. But because the Solomon Islands played 2-2 against Australia, New Zealand only reached third place in the table, which meant elimination.
In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , New Zealand won the 2008 OFC Cup of Nations and qualified for two play-offs against Bahrain , the fifth in the Asian qualifiers. New Zealand won the second leg at home against Bahrain 1-0 after a 0-0 away match, which meant that New Zealand qualified for a World Cup for the second time. Here you met in Group F on Italy , Paraguay and Slovakia . With three draws, New Zealand was eliminated after the preliminary round, but as third in the group it was able to leave the then reigning world champion Italy behind. New Zealand was the only team at this World Cup that did not suffer defeat.
In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , New Zealand only had to compete in the second round, which took place as the 2012 Oceania Cup . New Zealand could surprisingly not win the championship, but qualify for the 3rd World Cup qualifying round. In this, New Caledonia, Oceania champions Tahiti and the Solomon Islands were eliminated with six wins in six games. The team thus reached the intercontinental play-offs against Mexico , fourth in the CONCACAF qualification. However, both games were lost (1: 5 and 2: 4).
New Zealand also failed in the intercontinental play-off round for the 2018 World Cup in Russia . As the winner of the Oceania qualification, where they clearly defeated the Solomon Islands in the finals, New Zealand had to compete this time against the fifth of the CONMEBOL qualifications, Peru , and lost 0-0 and 0-2.
