qualification

The team qualified via the OFC Nations Cup 2008 for the World Cup in South Africa .

At the OFC Nations Cup, the New Zealanders who had already been assigned met the three best teams from the South Pacific Games 2007 - New Caledonia , Fiji and Vanuatu .

Under the leadership of national coach Ricki Herbert , the team achieved five wins in six qualifying games from October 2007 to November 2008 and only lost 2-0 in the last game against Fiji.

A controversy had previously arisen as the New Zealand authorities refused to issue an entry visa to the goalkeeper of the Fijian national team Simione Tamanisau . The reason for this was that Tamanisau's father-in-law is a member of the Fijian military regime and New Zealand does not allow members of the family of members of the regime entry. The game between New Zealand and Fiji was then played in Lautoka , Fiji .

As the winner of the second round, New Zealand played for a World Cup place in the relegation against Bahrain , the winner of the play-off between the two group thirds of the fourth round of the AFC qualification. After the first leg ended in a 0-0 draw, New Zealand won the second leg 1-0 just four days later in front of their home crowd.

New Zealand contingent

National coach Ricki Herbert announced his final World Cup squad on May 10, 2010, one month before the registration deadline. As a result of the change of association guidelines changed by FIFA in May 2009 , New Zealand was able to recruit several players from Europe for the national team. In addition to Rory Fallon and Michael McGlinchey , who were already used in the two play-off games, the English junior international Tommy Smith and the Danish U-21 international Winston Reid decided to play for New Zealand in the future. Aside from Reid, Aaron Clapham is the only player who was called into the World Cup squad without a previous international match. Goalkeeper Glen Moss has been nominated despite being suspended for the first two World Cup group matches due to a dismissal during qualifying. The 30-player preliminary entry list also included Jacob Spoonley , Kosta Barbarouses , Andy Barron , Kris Bright , Chad Coombes , Cole Peverley and Aaron Scott .

In the preliminary round of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the New Zealand national soccer team met in Group F on the world champions Italy , Paraguay and Slovakia . Against Slovakia, the team was able to level a deficit at the last minute, against the high favorites Italy they could also save a draw after a 1-0 lead. In the last game, a goalless draw was not enough. Although the All Whites had fared significantly better than when they first participated 28 years earlier, where they had lost all games, the team was eliminated after the preliminary round.
