Christopher "Chris" Grant Wood (born December 7, 1991 in Auckland ) is a New Zealand football player .

Club career

Wood, who also has a British passport, came to West Bromwich for a trial training session in 2007 after his performance at the U-17 World Cup and was accepted into the youth academy in 2008. He previously played in New Zealand for Hamilton Wanderers in the Northern League and Waikato FC in the New Zealand Football Championship , the country's top division. For the youth team of the Albions Wood distinguished himself as a regular goalscorer and then came to the reserve team to appearances. In April 2009 he was nominated by Tony Mowbray for the Premier League game against Portsmouth FC and came on as the fifth New Zealander in the English elite league in the 75th minute. A short time later, the New Zealand Association recognized him as Young Player of the Year 2008, an award that he received again in 2009.

For the 2009/10 season Wood received a professional contract and was a regular substitute in the 2009/10 second division season . He scored his first competitive goal on September 15 in a 3-1 win against Doncaster Rovers , and at the end of the season he returned to the Premier League as runner-up. There Wood hardly got a chance at the start of the season and was therefore awarded to the second division FC Barnsley for two months in September 2010 . This was followed by another loan to third division club Brighton & Hove Albion , the stay originally planned to January 2011 was extended after six missions until the end of the season. Wood scored eight goals for Brighton in 29 appearances, helping the club to the championship title in Football League One 2010/11 and the associated promotion.

On August 5, 2011, he moved to Birmingham City on loan . After half a year there he was awarded again, this time to the second division Bristol City . For the 2012/13 season he was loaned to Millwall FC .

In January 2013 he moved to Leicester City . After a loan to Ipswich Town from February to May 2015, Wood moved from Leicester to Leeds United .

On August 21, 2017, it was announced that Wood was moving to Burnley FC and had a contract there until 2021. The transfer fee is said to be around £ 15m.

National team

With the New Zealand U-17 selection Wood took part in the U-17 World Cup in South Korea in 2007 , but retired with his team after the group stage with 0:13 goals. In May 2009, national coach Ricki Herbert Wood surprisingly called for the 2009 Confederations Cup for the first time in the senior national team . After his debut in a preparation game against Tanzania in early June, he was also used in the second group game against South Africa .

In October and November 2009 Wood was part of the New Zealand squad in the two play-off games for the 2010 World Cup against Bahrain. He was substituted on during the second half when New Zealand qualified for a World Cup for the first time since 1982 with a 1-0 home win. At the World Cup finals, Ricki Herbert played in a 4-3-3 system with three nominal tips, but he preferred Shane Smeltz , Chris Killen and Rory Fallon , Wood came in the three games against Slovakia , defending champions Italy and Paraguay each as a substitute, New Zealand were eliminated after three draws undefeated in the group stage.
