Robert "Robbie" Brady (born January 14, 1992 in Dublin ) is an Irish national football player . He has played for the Republic of Ireland since 2012 and has been under contract with the English club Burnley FC since 2017 .

Club career

Brady was in the youth team of the "St. Kevin's Boys ”discovered by talent scouts from England's record champions Manchester United and moved to the club's academy shortly after his 16th birthday. He had his first appearance for Manchester on January 19, 2008 in the U-18 team against Liverpool . As a result, he played regularly for both Manchester's U-18s and the reserve team. On October 26, 2010, he sat in the league cup game against Wolverhampton Wanderers for the first time with the first team on the bench. In July 2011 he was awarded to the second division Hull City , for which he scored three goals in 39 second division games. After his return he had his only appearance for the first team of Manchester on September 26, 2012 in the third round of the League Cup in a 2-1 win against Newcastle United . In the 4-5 defeat after extra time on October 31st in the round of 16 against Chelsea , he was on the bench and was not substituted on. After that it was awarded again to Hull City. Although he only scored one goal in twelve games, Hull bought him for 2.5 million euros after that . In the next 20 games he was then able to contribute with three goals that the club rose as a runner-up in the Premier League . In his first Premier League season he came to 16 appearances with three goals and contributed to the fact that the club escaped relegation in 16th place.

But more important was reaching the FA Cup final for the first time . The club had qualified for the third qualifying round of the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League and met Belgian cup winner Sporting Lokeren in the play-offs . After a 0-1 win in Belgium, Brady put his club 1-0 ahead in the sixth minute of the second leg and scored the goal to make it 2-1 after an interim penalty, which was not enough to advance due to the away goals rule . In the league he remained in 27 games without scoring and rose with the club as third from bottom. He was then sold to league promoted Norwich City for almost 10 million euros . For the club he scored three goals in 36 league games that could not prevent relegation. In the second division it was only enough for eighth place, so that the direct recovery failed. Brady then moved to the Premier League club Burnley FC , where in his first season the 16, in the second of the 7th and the third season of 15th place was reached. Brady was only used in less than half of the games.

National team

Brady played in May 2010 two games in the second qualifying round for the U-19 European Football Championship 2010 , in which his team lost to England . In September he was used in the last two U-21 games in qualifying for the 2011 U-21 European Championship . As the bottom of the table, the Irish had no chance to qualify at this point and also lost these games. A month later he was used in the first qualifying round for the 2011 U-19 European Football Championship . He scored the first goal in the 5-0 game against Luxembourg and the decisive 2-1 against Bulgaria. In autumn 2011 and summer 2012 he played seven times in qualifying for the 2013 U-21 European Championship . He scored four goals and is the record scorer of the U-21 team with a total of seven goals.

On September 11, 2012, he played for the senior national team for the first time in a 4-1 friendly match against Oman in Craven Cottage and scored the interim 2-0 with his first international goal. In the subsequent match in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , the Irish’s biggest home defeat, he only came into play in the 83rd minute in a 6-1 draw against Germany . In the next three games he was substituted on twice for the second half and once for the last 20 minutes. Then there was an international break of five months for him, in which he was not used six times, but sat on the bench in two World Cup qualifiers. It was only in August 2013 that he was used again for the first half of the friendly against Wales . After that he had to take another year off, even if he sat on the bench twice. It wasn't until September 2014 that he played his first 90-minute game in the friendly against Oman. In the following four games at the beginning of the qualification for the Euro 2016 he was substituted on three times and sat on the bench during the game against Germany. In the friendly game against the USA on November 18, 2014, he scored the goals to 2-1 and 4-1 final score and had thus conquered a regular place. In the next games he was substituted in the 1-1 playoff first leg of the European Championship qualification against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 86th minute for tactical reasons, but had brought the Irish 1-0 four minutes earlier. With a 2-0 in the second leg, where he did the preparatory work for one goal, the Irish qualified for the European Championship finals.

On May 12, 2016 he was appointed by national coach Martin O'Neill in the provisional 35-player squad for the EM . He was included as a regular in the final squad. He played all four games in the tournament over the full playing time. In the decisive final group game against Italy , he secured his team participation in the round of 16 with a header just before the end. There Ireland met hosts France and Brady converted a penalty in the second minute of the game to give them a 1-0 lead. The French turned the game around in the second half and beat Ireland 2-1.

In the qualification for the 2018 World Cup , which began after the EM , he was used in seven group matches. Coming in second behind Serbia , the Irish for the play-offs were qualified the best runners. Here he was also used against the Danes . After a goalless draw in Denmark, they lost the home game with 1: 5. In the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League he was only used in the goalless draw in Denmark. In qualifying for the 2020 European Football Championship , he made four appearances. In the end it was only enough for 3rd place. Since the group opponents in the Nations League group qualified directly for the European Championship finals, the Irish still have the chance to qualify via the playoffs in March 2020.
