Ashley Luke Barnes (born October 30, 1989 in Bath ) is an English football player with Austrian roots who has been under contract as a striker for Burnley FC since January 2014 .

Club career

Barnes began his career with the Paulton Rovers , for whom he made his first team debut at the age of 17. As a result, he was invited by the championship club Plymouth Argyle to a trial training.

After he shone as a multiple goalscorer for the reserve team, he received a contract offer for 18 months. On August 14, 2007 he made his professional debut in the League Cup against Wycombe Wanderers when he came on for Sylvan Ebanks-Blake in the 74th minute .

In order to gain match practice, he was then loaned to several lower-class English clubs via short-term loan business.

After five goals in eight games in his last loan station at Eastbourne Borough , he was ordered back early for the game against Bristol City to Plymouth. After his championship premiere against Derby County on February 7, 2009, he became a regular player and shooting star of the team through consistently strong performances.

As a result, he drew the interest of the Premier League clubs Everton and Wigan Athletic , which prompted Plymouth to extend its contract to significantly increased salaries until 2011. When Plymouth got into relegation battle for the 2009/10 season, coach and promoter Paul Sturrock had to leave the club for the winter break and was replaced by Paul Mariner . He relied on established players in the relegation battle and brought the American Kenny Cooper from TSV 1860 Munich on loan for the position of Barnes.

In order not to endanger his development, he was then awarded for a month in League Two at Torquay United and after his return to League One at Brighton & Hove Albion until the end of the season . In Brighton, he then played big on and scored four goals in eight games whereupon they tried to get a firm commitment from the player.

Plymouth, due to the temporary relegation from the championship in financial problems, then forced him to transfer to the Seagulls for a transfer fee of just under € 500,000 .

In the following season he was immediately a top performer with seven goals and two assists in the first 15 rounds under coach Gustavo Poyet and in the 2010/11 season he was significantly involved in the promotion to the second highest division as a third division champion - the decisive goal for the 4-3 victory against Dagenham & Redbridge , who in turn ensured promotion, he did himself.

In January 2014 he moved to Burnley FC within the English second division .

National team

Due to an Austrian grandmother, he was not only eligible to play for test matches in his home country England, but also for Austria .

On August 19, 2008 Barnes made his debut under coach Andreas Heraf for the Austrian U20 national team against Switzerland .

Barnes presented himself with his manager at the ÖFB to play for the national team. Since he does not have Austrian citizenship , he could only be used thanks to the consent of the Swiss.

The ÖFB announced that it would continue to monitor its development.

Little by little, the idea of a naturalization aimed at by the ÖFB (which would mean that he could perform his services for the Austrian national team) became more concrete, but in February 2019 the application was rejected by the Austrian Ministry of the Interior , because Barnes, at the discretion of the authority, the Do not fully meet the criteria for naturalization without legal entitlement.
