Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson (born October 27, 1990 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic football player who has been under contract with the English first division club Burnley FC since 2016 .
Career
society
Jóhann played in his youth a. A. for the youth teams of FC Chelsea and FC Fulham , but his first professional station was the Icelandic first division club Breiðablik from Kópavogur . Here he played u. A. with the later Icelandic national players Alfreð Finnbogason , Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson , Elfar Freyr Helgason and Guðmundur Kristjánsson . In the summer of 2009 he was signed by the Dutch first division club AZ Alkmaar , where he met a fellow countryman with Kolbeinn Sigþórsson .
National team
Jóhann made his debut for the Icelandic national team on August 20, 2008 against Azerbaijan. 10 months later he came in the World Cup qualifier against Macedonia as a substitute for his first competitive game. In the 2010/11 European Championship qualification, he was already a permanent member of the national squad, although he also played in the U-21 selection at the same time. He was used in 7 of the 8 group games and only once was he not in the starting line-up. On November 14, 2012, he scored his first international goal in the friendly against Andorra.
In qualifying group E for the 2014 World Cup , he was initially only a substitute. A special game for him was the game against Switzerland on September 6, 2013. For the first time he was on the starting line-up and not only scored the 1-0 after Switzerland had moved away to 4-2, but only reduced it to 4: 3 and then scored the equalizer in stoppage time. Iceland made it into relegation and only failed in the second leg to Croatia. Jóhann played the last six qualifying games over the full playing time.
Qualifying for the 2016 European Football Championship in France was similar . In the beginning he wasn't used at all and from the 5th game he was a regular again. Iceland made the EM participation perfect early and only lost the last, meaningless group game. Then Jóhann was accepted into the Icelandic squad. In the first encounter with Portugal he was in the starting line-up and gave the template for the 1-1 equalizer. He also played the other four tournament games from the start. As a newcomer to the European Championship, the team made it to the quarter-finals.
He was also on the Icelandic squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Iceland was able to take part in a World Cup finals for the first time. After a draw with Argentina and defeats against Nigeria and Croatia, Iceland was eliminated as the last in Group D in the preliminary round; Jóhann was used against Argentina and Croatia.
