Joshua "Josh" Brownhill (born December 19, 1995 in Warrington ) is an English football player

The midfielder played in Manchester United youth and took his first steps in professional football at Preston North End . After a six-month loan deal at Barnsley FC , he joined Bristol City , where he completed over 150 competitive appearances in three and a half years. Since January 2020 he has been under contract with the first division club Burnley FC .

Club career

Preston North End

Josh Brownhill attended Birchwood Community High School in his hometown of Warrington , a town in Cheshire in north-west England. He started playing football at Warrington Town and joined Preston North End's youth division through Manchester United in 2012 at the age of 15 . On October 8, 2013, he made his debut for the Lilywhites in a 2-0 home loss to Oldham Athletic . In the third highest English division , he played his first game on October 12 (12th matchday) in the 0-2 home defeat against Crewe Alexandra , when he came on for Joel Byrom in the 73rd minute . Just a week later, he scored for the first time in his first start in a 2-1 away win against FC Gillingham . As a result, he established himself as a rotation player and ended the 2013/14 season with three goals in 25 league games.

The next season 2014/15 he started as a regular player, but dropped out of the starting line-up in October 2014. From the end of December to the beginning of February 2015, he was back in action there, but then only came on a brief assignment. During this season he played 18 league games in which he scored two goals and rose with Preston North End as runner-up in the second-rate Football League Championship .

Loan to Barnsley FC

In the first half of the following 2015/16 season , he only made three short appearances in the league. In order to collect match practice, Brownhill was loaned to third division FC Barnsley on January 14, 2016 for a month . For two days he was already on the pitch over the full distance in a 3-0 away win against Shrewsbury Town . On February 1, the loan business was extended until the end of the season. At Barnsley he became the undisputed regular player and won of his first ten games in which he was used, nine, which Barnsley caught up from the middle of the table to the play-off ranks. On March 5, 2016 (35th matchday), he scored his first goal for the Tykes in a 3-1 away win against FC Walsall . On April 3, 2016, they won the Football League Trophy 2015/16 with a 3-2 final win over Oxford United . Ultimately, Barnsley qualified as sixth in the table for the play-offs. After winning the first leg 3-0, Brownhill contributed a late goal in the 3-1 away win in the second leg against FC Walsall. After the comfortable promotion to the final at Wembley Stadium , they also won this on May 29, 2016 3-1 against Millwall FC , making Brownhill promotion to the championship for the second time in a row. On May 31, 2016, the loan deal ended and Brownhill returned to Preston, where his future was uncertain due to the end of the season contract.

Bristol City

On June 2, 2016 it was announced that Josh Brownhill will join the second division Bristol City for the 2016/17 season on a free transfer, where he signed a two-year deal. There he met coach Lee Johnson , who trained him at Barnsley until the beginning of February 2016 before moving to Bristol City. He made his debut for his new employer on August 6, 2016 (1st matchday) in a 2-1 home win against Wigan Athletic . At the Robins he was initially a rotation player, but made it into the starting line-up more and more in the second half of the season. He scored his only goal of the season in 27 league games on April 29, 2017 (45th matchday) in a 1-0 away win against Brighton & Hove Albion .

In the following season 2017/18 he became the undisputed regular player under Johnson. He scored his first goal of the season in a 2-2 draw against Brentford FC on matchday 3 (August 15, 2017) . He ended the season with five goals and four assists in 45 league games. In the following season 2018/19 he was still a constant figure in midfield . He scored his first goal of the season on September 2, 2018 (6th matchday) in a 4-1 home win against Blackburn Rovers . On November 28th (18th matchday) he saw the yellow-red card in the 0-2 away defeat against Leeds United in the 55th minute of the game and thus flew for the first time in his career. The perceived one-game suspension should be Brownhills' only missed league game this season. So he came back to 45 league appearances, in which he collected five goals and four assists just like in the previous season. On August 17, 2019 (3rd matchday), he led his team onto the field for the first time as captain in the 2-0 home win against Queens Park Rangers . From this game he took over the captain's armband completely. Up until his move, he played in 28 league games this 2019/20 season , in which he scored five goals and prepared two more goals.

Burnley FC

Josh Brownhill left Bristol City on January 30, 2020 after more than 150 competitive appearances and moved to Burnley FC in the Premier League . The Lancashire club paid a transfer fee of ten million euros for the midfielder and gave him a 4-1 / 2-year contract.
