Ashley Roy Westwood (born April 1, 1990 in Nantwich ) is an English football player . The midfielder was trained at Crewe Alexandra and moved to the Premier League club Aston Villa shortly after being promoted to the third division in 2012 . He has been playing for Burnley FC since 2017 .

Athletic career

In the month of his 18th birthday Westwood received his first professional contract with third division club Crewe Alexandra . Previously, he had received his skills to be a good defensive midfielder in the club's youth academy, which enjoys high national recognition. In order to gain match practice, his club initially loaned him briefly in 2008 to the home club Nantwich Town, which was a few classes lower . From the 2008/09 season he was a regular in Crewe and 2012 significantly involved in the promotion to the third division. Westwood convinced with a style of play that was described as "elegant" and reminded of Michael Carrick . For the following season 2012/13 coach Steve Davis promoted him to team captain. Since Westwood's name was often associated with first division clubs at the time, he did not hold this office for long and shortly before the end of the summer changeover period, he moved to Aston Villa for a transfer fee of two million pounds. Negotiations with Swansea City had previously failed because the Welsh club had been willing to pay significantly less for Westwood.

Westwood made his debut on September 15, 2012 against Swansea City (2-0) by substitution in the second half for Stephen Ireland and on November 3, 2012 he was against Sunderland AFC (1-0) for the first time in the starting XI of the "Villans". He acted alongside Barry Bannan and received great praise for his performance. From then on he matured into a permanent fixture of the first division club from Birmingham and in August 2015 he extended his contract for another five years. Shortly before, he had taken part in the FA Cup final against Arsenal and lost 4-0 there - he was substituted for Carlos Sánchez after a good 70 minutes . After his five-year contract expired, Westwood moved to Burnley FC .
