Kevin Finbarr Long (born August 18, 1990 in Cork ) is an Irish football player . The central defender trained at Cork City moved to England for Burnley FC in early 2010 and was appointed to the Irish national team for the first time in 2017 .

Career

Cork City

Long learned to play football in the youth department of his home club Cork City , where he signed his first professional contract in January 2008. He then won the FAI Youth Cup with the youth team and in the 2009 season he played 16 games in the top Irish league. As a (left) central defender, he developed into one of the club's most promising talents. Although in the end the third place jumped out, the subsequent forced relegation ensured that the sporting prospects for Long in his native city suddenly deteriorated. He played now in England and while he tried his hand at Preston North End , the two third division clubs Leeds United and Charlton Athletic as well as the Premier League of Burnley FC were initially interested. At the end of November 2009 it was announced that Burnley had prevailed against further specific offers from Everton and Celtic Glasgow and that the “youngster” would officially join the squad in January 2010 after the transfer window had opened. The contract ran until June 2013.

Loan transactions

In order to gain first match practice, borrowed in Burnley in October 2010 to the fourth division club Accrington Stanley . The transaction, initially limited to one month, was extended to January 2011 due to the good performance of the newcomer in the defensive center, although his debut in the 2: 3 against Rotherham United on October 16, 2010 with a red card was unsuccessful after just 17 minutes. After a temporary return, Long ended the 2010/11 season in Accrington and in August 2011 he joined the club there for another six months, before the engagement ended after a total of 63 competitive games and three goals.

In January 2012, another loan deal followed, now with the third division AFC Rochdale , which was looked after by Accrington's former coach John Coleman . After four games with two wins and one draw, the loan was extended here, too, with the 2011/12 season ending disappointingly with relegation as bottom of the table. In mid-August 2012, Long went back to the third division, now for a good one and a half months at Portsmouth FC .

Burnley FC

After his return in October 2012, Long was at his home club, which had meanwhile been relegated from the top English division, for the first time in the extended squad and was in the starting line-up in December 2012 against Watford FC . In the following 2013/14 season, he contributed seven second division appearances on the way to promotion to the Premier League . There, his only league game in the 2014/15 season was unhappy when his cruciate ligament tore after being substituted on against Newcastle United on New Year's Day . After his recovery, he joined the third division FC Barnsley on loan in November 2015 , which later achieved promotion to the second division, and from March 2016 the second division Milton Keynes Dons , for whom Long only played two championship games and who in turn played in the third League relegation.

Long returned to Burnley for the 2016/17 season and signed a new contract there until June 2018. In his second Premier League appearance on May 6, 2017 (and the first appearance in the starting line-up) he was on the decisive point to secure the Relegation involved and remained in the team in the last two games of the season. In the course of the 2017/18 season, Long was a regular player at times, played 16 league games and qualified with his men above seventh place for the Europa League. In the following year, however, Ben Mee and James Tarkowski crystallized as "set" in central defense, so that Long only played five times in the Premier League.

Irish national team

In May 2017, Long was first called up to the 37-man squad for the Irish national team after becoming a temporary regular in Burnley. The following June he made his debut as a substitute in the friendly against Mexico and a few days later he started against Uruguay . When Mick McCarthy was promoted to office as a new coach in 2018 , Long remained a fixture in his plans and on his twelfth appearance he scored his first international goal against Bulgaria .
