Defending champion Bohemians Dublin won the championship for the eleventh time. With Cork City and Derry City , two teams had to be relegated to the First Division .

    1 Cork City was excluded and transferred to the First Division before the start of the following season.
    2 Derry City was forced to relegate as it had illegal secondary contracts with its players.

    4th Bray Wanderers escaped direct relegation due to Derry City's forced relegation, and Galway United did not have to play relegation games. Bray lost in the relegation playoffs, but remained in the top division due to the subsequent relegation of Cork City .
