The A Lyga 2009 was the 20th season of the top Lithuanian league in men's football. It began on April 4, 2009 and ended on October 31, 2009. Ekranas Panevėžys was able to successfully defend his title from the previous year.

Incidents leading up to the season

A Lyga was shaken to its foundations before the season when FBK Kaunas and Atlantas Klaipėda decided not to start the new season on March 20, 2009. The reason given by the two clubs was differences of opinion with the Lithuanian Football Association about the way the league was run. Already on March 5, Žalgiris Vilnius was withdrawn from the start of the top division due to great financial difficulties of the club.

As a result, the chairman of the National Football Clubs' Association (NFKA), Gintaras Ugianskis , resigned from his post. In addition, the league organization was handed over to the LFF.

Because of these failures, the clubs of the second class 1 Lyga were given the choice of taking the starting places of the three "eliminated" clubs. Interested clubs had until March 26, 2009 to apply. On March 27, the LFF finally announced the three replacement teams: Banga Gargždai , LKKA ir Teledema Kaunas and Kruoja Pakruojis were appointed to the first division. In addition, the FBK Kaunas and Atlantas Klaipėda were downgraded to the third highest division due to "immoral behavior and other irregularities". Žalgiris Vilnius, however, was granted a license for the second class 1 Lyga .

1Vėtra Vilnius was denied participation in the 2010/11 Europa League. Since the Lithuanian Cup final was played between the Lithuanian champions Ekranas Panevėžys and Vėtra Vilnius, Sūduva Marijampolė and KFK Šiauliai qualified for the second and fifth Tauras Tauragė for the first qualifying round of the 2010/11 Europa League.
