The Ligat ha'Al 2008/09 was the tenth season of the highest Israeli football league under this name, and the 60th season overall. Since the league was increased to 16 teams in the following season , only the bottom of the table had to relegate to the league Leumit , the teams in places one to five of the second division rose directly. The eleventh of the first division played against the sixth of the second division for relegation.
Maccabi Haifa won the championship.

1 Beitar Jerusalem had two points deducted before the start of the season and another due to racist behavior by fans in the match against Maccabi Petach Tikwa on April 18, 2009. In addition, the club was not licensed by UEFA for the European competitions the following year.
